Painting the winter days away!

I have been enjoying painting this winter.  The first painting I accomplished for the new year is 'Venus on the Shelf' 40x50cm Acrylic on cradled board.  I began with playing the various elements that I had collected. I ordered a range of used books with Venus in the title.  It was really hard not to order some of the books.  What great titles I found to use: Unearthing Venus, The Venus Fixers, Venus Prime, Venus with Bicepts and the list goes on and on.  I couldn't fit in some of the titles I got a kick out of like Venus Envy and Cruel Venus.

Above are a few of the set ups that I did.  The bottom one is the one I finally decided on.

Then I began to paint!  Working back to front.

I discovered that I need to have a tool to help me see the small details of the still life.  So after hours of trying to find exactly what I was looking for with binoculars I finally contacted an artist who I follow and asked where he got the ones I see him use.  Thankfully artists are so helpful and I received a response right away and had the binoculars ordered right away.  I can't wait to work on my next still life...that will be in March. It is a commission so I won't share until it has been gifted.  :)

It was a real challenge in a number of ways but I was able to stay focus and got through it fairly unscathed.  :)

This painting is available and can be found HERE.

I would love to hear what you think of the painting.  Thanks for dropping by.

Looks like you did your best to finish that painting! It looks so realistic. The shadows are in the right place and the colors are perfect! I wish I could also paint like that. It's so frustrating because I'm not even good at drawing. No matter how hard I try, the human figures that I draw just look like walking sticks. I guess drawing is not for me. I'll just enjoy admiring other's works. This painting is awesome! Good luck to your future projects.

Thanks Best Essays. You are my very first comment on this blog! :) Ya it took me a while of very focused learning to get decent at drawing. I still have a long ways to go to but I am on the right path. Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate knowing that someone is reading my blog. LOL. Have a great day. See you again soon.

That was just so beautiful. I took glances just to prove whether it is a painting or a real thing. I admire your art work a lot. I am so curious about the materials you have used in order to come up with this. If you don't mind, I would like to ask, what was the thought you come up and ended up having a painting like this or what is your inspiration on doing this? I would be very happy if I will be able to get an answer from you. I will keep being updated on your blogs. Keep on posting.

Hi there
thank you for leaving such a lovely comment. :) My original inspiration was from a curated art show theme which was about the Roman goddess Venus. So I collected a range of books, and the statue of Venus of Willendorf and some other stuff with Venus in the name because I love doing still life paintings. I hope that answers your questions.

    Shawna Lampi-Legaree

Yellowknife watercolour and acrylic artist Shawna Lampi-Legaree’s latest venture can best be summarized as capturing moments of beauty from the world around her.

Her exploration of ephemeral flowers in watercolour has been a glorious journey of seeking out and capturing the delicate and luminous quality of the blossom.  Simply put, she has been “painting summer sunshine all winter long”. Her technique includes multi-layer washes which build to a crescendo on the paintings that capture the drama of sunlight and the depth of shadows.

More recently, Shawna’s acrylic painting has expanded to include the wealth of the feathered friends that all northerners love.  She has enjoyed the wonderful winter antics of trickster ravens, playful ptarmigan and mischievous LBT’s (little brown things).  As the spring migration begins Shawna hopes to begin capturing the beauty of our transient flyers. Watch for some interesting images capture flight, reflection in water and the simply beauty of our northern landscape
