I have lived in the north for 22 years, 5 years in what was called Frobisher Bay, Northwest Territories when I first arrived, and is now Iqaluit, Nunavut. Inukshuks are the landmarks that the Inuit of northern Canada created with the tools and materials available to them on the tundra that they spent their whole lives living on. During the nomadic life of the Inuit, they used the inukshuk extensively to find their way to good hunting or fishing spots that would help these hardy, ingenious people to survive in one of our planets harshest regions. Distances in the North are amazingly diffucilt to judge by most people, as there is little air pollution in the far reaches of the North which would create the atmospheric qualities of fading and blueing of distant objects which are evident in more southernly regions (for examples, in the mountains). One feels a great feedom when there are incredible vistas in every direction with no trees to block the view and little air pollution to interffere with the spectacular beauty. In this quilt I tried to create that sence of clarity and majesty of this amazing part of Canada.
